At night when they were ready to close the bank, they would start the timer. Once the timer was started, they would not be able to open the vault even with the correct combination, until the preset time had elapsed.

There was more than one timer just in case one of the timers failed. As long as one timer continued to operate, they would be able to open the vault with the correct combination.

If all of the timers failed, they would have no choice but to contact someone who was better at opening safes, like Jessie James, Al Capone, or the IRS to get it open.
