Old Time Accuracy
At first, mechanical clocks were within a couple hours a day, but they were still more accurate than a sun dial after the sun went down. The first clocks were powered by a stone or metal weight and about 1490 the spring was invented to power clocks, However, Your best mechanical clocks are still powered by a metal weight instead of a spring because the power delivery is more consistent. As a spring winds down, it looses power so this could have an effect on accuracy. With a weight driven clock, the weight remains the same through the entire wind cycle so the power source remains the same. About 1880 a way was devised to standardize time. Now, time is the great equalizer. It does not mater how rich or poor, how tall or short, what color you are, or how religious or of what religion you are. When it is top of the hour for me, it is top of the hour for you. You could have all of the money in the world, but for right now you can not do anything about the passing of time.
Interesting Bosses
Time is our boss and by creating interesting, fascinating, or beautiful clocks, time
our boss, becomes a little easier to deal with. The Conger Street Clock Museum is
actually a museum about time as much as it is about clocks. In fact there are many
items in the museum that are not clocks at all but they do represent time in its
most interesting form and everything in the museum is basically mechanical.
